Formamide is supplied distilled, deionized and packaged under nitrogen. When exposed to oxygen, formamide breaks down into formic acid and ammonia, which can degrade nucleic acid samples. Bottles that have been opened and stored should be deionized prior to use by mixing 1gm of mixed bed resign per 10mL of formamide for 30 minutes.
